Maxwell

When Brick effortlessly lifted the park bench, his muscles flexing against the thin fabric of his t-shirt, Maxwell was just barely able to not gawk too obviously. He noticed that Nicole wasn’t as successful, or just didn’t give a damn. With her mouth hanging open and her hand grabbing ahold of Maxwell’s arm as if for balance, she watched Brick carry the park bench to where Maxwell indicated.

“Does he have a straight friend?” Nicole whispered to Maxwell. Before Maxwell could reply, she turned her attention back to Brick. “Maybe it would look better if he moved the bench over there,” Nicole said, pointing a few feet to the left while nibbling her lip.

Brick shrugged and leaned over to grab the bench.

Maxwell rolled his eyes and playfully shoved Nicole away. “No. Right there is perfect, Brick.”

Nicole stomped her foot, but carried Gumby to the bench. The breeze had picked up and Gumby was having trouble staying in his seat.

“Why don’t you sit down next to him and hold him in place? Brick, you go around behind and look like you’re mad because Gumby moved in on your woman.”

They had been taking silly pictures for a couple of hours. Any thought of Brick being disappointed had faded long ago. He seemed to be having the most fun of any of them.

“I should have brought the cowboy hat,” Brick said as he moved into position.

“If you had, I wouldn’t be able to keep my hands off of you,” Maxwell said, while trying to find the right angle for the shot.

“Sure. Rub it in,” Brick answered, waiting patiently.

Maxwell thought something was missing but couldn’t figure out what, until he saw the flower shop next door.

“No one move. I’ll be right back.”

Maxwell bought one rose and handed it to Nicole when he returned. “Okay. Smell the rose and pretend that Gumby gave it to you while Brick was off checking a baseball score.”

“That bastard,” Brick yelled, shaking his fist.

“Oh, yes. Do that.”

Nicole held the flower to her nose. Brick held his fist out toward Gumby. Gumby seemed to smirk in the sunshine.

Maxwell exhaled and snapped the picture between breaths, just like he did when he shot his gun. He took a few more shots as backups even though he knew the first had been perfect.

“Okay. That’s a wrap. Let’s get some lunch. I don’t know anything around here. Where should we go?”

“The taco place across the river,” Nicole said first.

“Deal,” Brick immediately agreed while rubbing his stomach.

Maxwell made a mental note to go out of his way to treat Brick’s friends as amazingly as Brick was treating Nicole.

I definitely need to be as good to his friends as he’s being to mine. No more crazy mood swings allowed.

Maxwell wanted to ask if she’d heard from Billy again. If things worked out, they might be able to talk her into leaving him and going on a date with one of Brick’s friends. But he worried that talking about her boyfriend would upset her and ruin the good time they were having, so he left the topic alone.
